Blue Monday… How do I survive the most depressing day of the year?

Isn’t Monday also your favorite day of the week? Then you probably have it extra tough today! It is Blue Monday, also called “Depression Monday”, the most depressing day of the year .

What is Blue Monday?

As psychologist Cliff Arnall discovered in 2005, Blue Monday is the most depressing day of the year . He developed the following formula to calculate the exact date:

[1 / 8W + (Dd)] x3 / 8TQ: MxNA

To determine what really is the saddest day of the year, he takes into account variables such as good intentions that have already been broken , the bad weather , the complete lack of motivation and the salary (which is already running out). Despite the formula, the day always falls on the third Monday of January. So if you run into a conspicuously grumpy people that day… it’s not your fault. The only benefit? It doesn’t get any worse. After Blue Monday it can only get better.

Monday blues

It’s always Monday that ruins our mood. After another far too short weekend, the sound of your alarm clock on Monday morning always sounds a bit worse than the rest of the week. Lifeless, cranky and tired you drag yourself to work. And you really only wish for one thing: let that Monday soon be over. This phenomenon is also referred to as the Monday blues.

Winter depression

During the cold, dark winter months it is a lot more difficult to get out of your warm bed in the morning. For some people, the winter is so bad that they suffer from winter depression. The reason for this is the persistent darkness and the lack of sun hours . A vitamin D deficiency is often one of the consequences. To get enough vitamins, the nutrition center recommends eating at least 250 grams of vegetables and 200 grams of fruit per day.

Monday motivation

Actually, it’s not even Monday’s fault that we are so tired at the beginning of the week. An American research institute found that Monday, immediately after Tuesday, is the most productive day of the week. So despite Blue Monday, the weekly Monday blues and your winter depression, with these 5 tips you always have a fresh start to your work week:

Sunday rest day …

Everything starts with a good weekend. Instead of planning your Saturday and Sunday completely, it is good to also allow yourself some rest and relax. Also avoid long television evenings. Instead, grab a book or listen to an episode of your favorite podcast. Drink a cup of tea and close yourself off completely.

Have fun

Anticipation is the best fun. If you feel like doing something, you sometimes literally jump out of bed for it. So why can’t you look forward to Monday? Schedule a lunch appointment with a nice colleague . Bring fresh flowers for your desk. Or prepare a nice lunch for Monday on Sunday. This way you make Monday as fun as possible and it makes getting up a lot easier!

Don’t snooze …

You prefer to turn around for a while and stay there for another 5, 10 or 20 minutes… You will run out of time later on. You quickly drink a cup of coffee and rush to work. Do you find it difficult to get up in the morning? Then turn on the light immediately or set your alarm clock on the other side of the bedroom . Then you have to get out of bed.

Structure your day

A structured working day can also be motivating. For example, make a to-do list , so you can always tick off what you have done and you will not lose the overview. Also write down the smaller tasks , such as emptying your mailbox.

Enough break

Do you have a busy working day? Then try to take a break regularly . When you work at the computer, your eyes need a screen break in between . Looking out the window for 2 minutes now and then can be enough.

Keep moving

Try to avoid sitting for several hours at a time. Looking at your screen for hours can make you tired and lethargic. Occasionally getting up , stretching your legs during breaks, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator can stimulate your circulation and keep you awake and alert .

  • Blue Monday is the most depressing day of the year . This day always falls on the third Monday of January.
  • Especially in winter it is dark for a long time. Eat enough fruits and vegetables to get enough vitamins.
  • Make nice plans for Monday and getting up is much easier.
